Allen organ of society: a passion for perfection

When it comes to industrial production, Pennsylvania, is nothing if not are not diversified. Manufactured products as diverse as steel, textiles, silk and slate roofs have been, and in some cases still are, of course, shot in the State Keystone. Even for some readers of this magazine, you may be surprised to know that Pennsylvania is also home to the largest manufacturers of church and theater organs in the world and also one of the most respected.

Allen Organs are electronic, although sometimes the company is obliged to produce a combined body. This complements an organ pipe organ stop adding electronic classic when necessary or desirable to complete the pipeline. Few, even among classical musicians can tell where the ends of the pipe and starts the electronic noise.

Because Jerome Markowitz, founder Company, had a passion for perfection that keeps the family business today. Even invented a mail stop doubling the whistle light performed by an organ pipe, where the air enters, but before the pipe sounds its note.

Devotees of traditional pipe organs they do not, in many cases, has been conquered by Allen, and other electronic organs in the field. But if new technology is very strong, both economically and artistically. Many churches and synagogues that want the organs can not afford a traditional instrument, but finding an email to our staff.

In the artistic sense, the final year trial should be in the ear of the beholder, but the instruments have much to recommend Allen. The first note heard by a paying public in the New York Philharmonic, now Avery Fisher Hall. Allen has been played by famous organists, as Dame Gillian Weir, E. pm Power Biggs and Virgil Fox's end.

Fox actually spent the latter part of his soaring career of Allen organ that could be described as furniture instead of phones. (Also was a good position to demonstrate the sustainability of the instruments of Allen. The truck carrying the instrument once delivered to him. The truck was destroyed. But when The body was recovered and transported to their destination, she played as if nothing had happened).

Jerome Markowitz, founder of the Society of organs Allen was a native of Jamaica, NY As a young man who was a big fan of technology, including electronic. While a student at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, was fascinated by the sounds of the organ in the chapel.

Could produce this wonderful range of electronic sounds? He dropped out of college and creating a company to find out. And as Allentown loved and admired the work ethic and craftsmanship of its time, the population largely Pennylvania Netherlands that remained in the city and named his company after its creation.

When I later had to move to Macungie more space the company maintains its admiration for the Pennsylvania Dutch and their art. Today, the most essential elements of their products are manufactured at the company, and each body is finally united under the attentive eye and hands employed craftsman.

Wooden boxes are also made in house and are manufactured to fine furniture standards. Some of these bodies were painted side panels, which are hand painted.

Visitors are labeled with the Pennsylvania Dutch, a Distelfink colorful ( "Thistle Finch") design. They bear the motto "Arbeit Gutie Kummt S'airsht." Or "good work comes first."

Decisions of bodies is obviously not a major industry in the world. However, thousands of people annually visit the headquarters of Allen International Corporation, located at 3370 Route 100 in Lower Macungie Township, near Allentown. They come in family groups of two or three, and buses 50 and 60.

There, you can visit Jerome Markowtiz Memorial Center. This museum organ function revealing the impressive progress of organic electronics technology in the years since 1937, Markowitz, built his first organ. They can also hear organ music in Octavianus Hall.

Visitors are welcome 9-3 and are invited to call in advance (610) 966-2202.

The company also sponsors a free series of organ concerts with established artists, attracting people in the neighborhood.

Due to government security standards, plant tours are not possible. But a virtual tour of the factory is on the website of Allen Organ target = "_blank"> www.allenorgancompany.com. .
