Computer Consulting purchase?

I have to buy a new PC for my home but I do not trust the sales people @ One local stores electronics. We use computers today to browse the web, email, photo storage / print some Word documents to light, and downloading music / storage. My daughter also plays some games like Bejeweled on it. I was thinking maybe replacing the W PC / laptop, but that will depend costs. Can anyone teach me on what to look? thanks!
