Using the computer as a simple electronic switch?

I liked the form of a draft back in my school days. Just connect a printer circuitary to parallel or serial port or joystick. When you write 1 to port (using a C program) that acts as a switch ON and 0 for OFF. If you send a series binary data in an interval of 1 second LED blinks 11,111,111. Thats the Bottomline concept. You will need to refer to the kinds of PC ports for information specific needs.
