Medical billing externa, also known as third-party medical billing, is regulated by the Office of Inspector General (OIG). The OIG was created by Congress in the Inspector General Act of 1978 in response to a series of government scandals that occurred in almost every major federal-1960s. The legislator said that the creation of an independent office of Inspector General that each federal agency, the government would be better able to detect and prevent fraud abuse and waste of Federal Taxpayers money. The hope was that these Federal watchdogs restore public confidence in government agencies.
The Office of Inspector General, in cooperation with the Department of SU Health and Human Services, developed and launched the Compliance Program Guidance for medical billing business for third, 30 November 1998. The purpose of this program is to promote higher ethical standards and legal care industry wide health and to protect the solvency and stability of the Medicare Trust Fund (also known as Medicare).
